In my earlier years, I was an avid reader. I loved adventure, romance, and intrigue novels. Upon entering the working world, I slowly drifted away from this one fulfilling love as reality with its expectations, stress, and demands became my primary concern. Just recently, I have found my love again.

The first book I picked up after this long absense that is truly worth acclaim is Kat Martin's Innocence Undone. I have always loved this author. Martin very rarely disappoints.

After their second novel, most authors' become redundent (read one, read them all). I despise that. Martin, though, has been able to keep each and every of her novels exciting and different, where the heros and heroines can be seen as human with their own sets of faults and failures. It is her writing style that makes the faults and failures believable and acceptable. She brings their humanity about with a grace and polish that I have found in only a few others. Many authors have the tendency to make their heros much too strong which creates an unbelievable character, or much to naggingly weak which also makes the character unbelievable.

Innocence Undone begins with Jessica Fox, an orphined street urchin who is kindly taken under the protection of an old and aging Marquess. It is with the Marguess' son, Matthew, that Jessica falls in love with but Matthew refuses to see her as anything but a thieving conniving whore as her mother was. He believes she is out for nothing more then his father's money and affluence.

It is truly sad because of her unrequitted love for Matthew and his utter disdain and cynicism of her. This story is about Jessica's struggle to overcome her odds and prove wrong the stigmas and stereotypes of society. Your heart goes out to this young and courageous girl who so bravely stands against the odds and sacrifices her love for what she believes is her only alternative.

This is a great story that will pull at your heart strings, make you sigh, make you cry, piss you off, make you burn with heat and passion (another plus to Martin's technique: her scenes are never boring! haha!). All her scenes are poignant and believable, and as the characters fall in love with each other, you fall right along with them. It is undeniable that Kat Martin is one of the genre's best authors to date. I would give this book a rating of 4 and a half stars (out of 5), and Kat Martin deserves a five star rating with me.
